Kasautii Zindagii Kay (English- The Test of Life) was an Indian drama-series that aired on STAR Plus from 2001 to 2008. The series is produced by popular Indian soap opera producer, Ekta Kapoor of Balaji Telefilms. The series was a daily soap that follows the adventure story of two lovers Anurag and Prerna. This show is ranked number 3 on the list of STAR Plus top 10 shows of all time. Totaling 1400 episodes, it is India's third longest running serial.

Prerna Sharma and Anurag Basu are the children of two great friends, Rajesh Sharma and Moloy Basu. Their fathers decided to get them married when they grow up. The two youngsters, at first, don't like the idea. But they meet in college and fall in love with each other. Moloy's wife Mohini doesn't want the marriage because Prerna comes from a middle class family, while the Basu family is very rich. She also doesn't approve of Moloy's friendship with Rajesh. On a picnic trip, Prerna and Anurag get lost and are trapped in a desolate cottage overnight. They end up consummating their love. Prerna and Anurag's bond is recognized by their fathers who decide to get them engaged. But in a tragic accident, Rajesh passes away and Prerna is heartbroken. Moloy is in coma. Mohini schemes and Anurag finally agrees to marry Komolika (his mother's friend's daughter). Prerna finds out she is pregnant while Anurag marries Komolika. In due course, Prerna gives birth to Prem, who becomes the apple of her eyes. In a shocking twist, it is revealed that Komolika doesn't love Anurag. Her only intention is to control the Basu fortune. Anurag learns the truth and divorces her. He also finds out that Prem is his son. Komolika vows revenge. Happiness seems to be back in Prerna and Anurag's life and they decide to get married again. Fate plays spoilsport when Komolika takes over the Basu property with the help of Mr. Rishabh Bajaj, who is a handsome, rich but also very shrewd, cunning and hardhearted businessman. The Basu family faces the worst time of their lives. Prerna pleads with Mr. Bajaj, who asks her to marry him in return for the property. Prerna doesn't want to do it but agrees for the sake of her love. Anurag is heartbroken and unable to forget Prerna even after her marriage to Bajaj. The reason why Mr. Bajaj wanted to marry Prerna is soon revealed. He actually has 3 children from his former marriage - Vishakha, Tushar and Kuki. The youngest, Kuki, is blind. He wants a responsible woman to take care of them. Slowly, Prerna gets attached to the 3 children, and they too love her back. While Rishabh is callous with her, she keeps on doing the duties of a wife and mother. Owing to this, Rishabh starts liking her, and she manages to bring about some change in him. She teaches him about being kind, helpful, loving his family, enjoying the simple things in life, etc. Slowly, Mr. Bajaj falls in love with Prerna and expresses his feelings to her. She is shocked by the turn of events since their marriage was contractual and the agreement was that they would never have a physical relationship. Time passes and Bajaj continues to express his feelings but at the same time does not breach the agreement. A new person enters their life - Ms. Menaka Bose. She finances Anurag's TV channel and is extremely interested in the Bajaj kids. It is later revealed that she is Mr. Bajaj's ex-wife and the mother of the three kids. She finds out about Bajaj's marriage to Prerna and tries to disrupt their lives. She tries to sway the kids to her side. But Prerna's efforts are fruitful and the kids show their loyalty to her. Anurag senses the friction between Prerna and Mr. Bajaj and decides to talk to her. Bajaj has gone out of the country on business. Anurag convinces Prerna to move on in her life with Mr. Bajaj. Prerna prepares to welcome her husband, but, as fate would have it, gets news of his death in a car accident in Australia. She is devastated beyond words.
A widowed Prerna decides to shoulder all of Mr. Bajaj's responsibilities. Tushar and Vishakha find out the truth behind Prerna's marriage to Mr. Bajaj and are disgusted by their father's actions. They decide to get Prerna married to Anurag, on the advice of their mother Menaka. It is then revealed that it is an elaborate plan by Menaka. She staged Bajaj's death; he is still alive but in coma. Her intention was to get her family back and have Prerna out of Bajaj's life. So she created such circumstances that Bajaj would suspect Prerna of trying to kill him only to get back with Anurag. Meanwhile, Prerna gets Kuki treated and her eyesight is restored. While Prerna and Anurag get married, Bajaj regains consciousness. Shrewdly, he figures out Menaka's evil plans and exposes her in front of his family. Menaka goes to jail. Everybody tries to convince Mr. Bajaj that he should accept the change of circumstances and let Prerna live with Anurag. Bajaj backs off but is not able to forget Prerna. The kids see their father in distress and realize their folly. Prerna and Anurag spend some happy days together with their son Prem. But Prerna loves Bajaj's children as her own and often neglects her duties to be with them. Then Komolika gets back into the Basu family. She marries Anurag's cousin Subroto. Anurag maintains a distance from her. Komolika keeps trying to instigate Mohini to believe that Prerna is bad and only cares for Bajaj's children. Mohini believes her and behaves badly with Prerna. Prerna faces a difficult time. Bajaj slyly tries to disrupt Prerna's life with Anurag. He keeps creating misunderstandings between the couple. Anurag refuses to trust him. He believes that Bajaj is the same hardhearted guy who took over his property and forced Prerna to marry him. But Prerna trusts Bajaj. Though she loves Anurag, she decides to help Bajaj as a friend. But Anurag misunderstands her. He gets jealous and thinks Prerna loves Bajaj. This causes friction the couple has regular fights. A major fight occurs on their son Prem's birthday when Prerna gets a call from Mr. Bajaj. A boy from Kuki's school has mud in her eyes and Prerna rushes to be with the little girl. This again causes fight to erupt between Anurag and Prerna. Mr. Bajaj decides to go out of Prerna's life. Then comes the biggest blow in Prerna and Anurag's life. Their 2 year old son Prem is kidnapped. Anurag, with the help of the police, searches every nook and corner of the city. Finally, when they find the boy, they are shocked to see him in a very critical condition, and a tragedy occurs as Prem dies in the hospital. Prerna and Anurag are devastated and so is the whole Basu family. The grieving parents struggle to come to terms with their son's death and end up blaming each other for the tragedy. Prerna cannot believe that Anurag is blaming her for her own child's death. Mr. Bajaj's helping hand causes more strain in this already shaky relationship and Prerna leaves the Basu house. Anurag, on the other hand, thinks Bajaj is behind Prem's death. In another shocking twist, the real kidnapper of Prem is revealed to be Subroto. He did all this to get the whole Basu property in his name. Though he didn't intend to kill Prem, the goons whom he hired to kidnap the child accidentally used too much chloroform, which caused the child's death. Komolika too knew this.
Prerna gets pregnant again and thinks Anurag will be happy about it. Anurag is initially happy to know about the pregnancy but is led to misunderstand Prerna by Komolika, who plants some scandalous pictures of Prerna and Mr.Bajaj. Anurag believes Prerna is carrying Bajaj's child. Prerna is stunned that Anurag doesn't trust her at all. Mohini uses the opportunity to widen the gaps between the couple and guide them to a divorce. Due to the incessant comments and questions from her own family, Prerna leaves the house and starts staying with Mr.Bajaj. On the other hand, a new friend Aparna enters Anurag's life and Mohini decides to get the two married. Anurag unhappily agrees. Prerna is devastated to know this. Anurag slowly accepts that Aparna is his present and Prerna his past. He soon grows fond of the sweet-natured Aparna and she loves him back. Komolika returns and, as usual, tries to create problems, but Aparna warns her off. Slowly, however, Komolika manages to sow the seeds of jealousy in Aparna's heart. Time passes and Prerna gives birth to a baby girl whom she names Sneha. After Prerna's delivery, Anurag decides to do a DNA tests as he thinks Sneha might be his daughter. Komolika, knowing everything, switches the test reports. Anurag, feeling bitter, gets drunk and ends up consummating his marriage with Aparna. He refuses to give his name to the child and she is named Sneha Prerna Sharma. Prerna, hurt beyond words, goes to the hill town of Panchameshwar with her daughter and Bajaj accompanies her. Prerna and Mr. Bajaj continue to live together as friends with his children and her daughter.
The focus shifts to Anurag's sister, Rakhi. She is going through a troubled marriage with her husband Prveen. Everyone is unaware of the fact. Rakhi is pregnant but this doesn't stop her husband from ignoring her. When she goes into labour, her husband isn't there. Anurag reaches her house, takes her to hospital and comes to know everything. He decides to get Rakhi and her husband divorced. Praveen feels very guilty and longs for his daughter, but Rakhi doesn't forgive him.
The show takes a leap of 8 years. Prerna, Anurag, Bajaj, Aparna and Komolika's destinies cross again. Prerna returns to Mumbai with an eight-year-old Sneha, who is the apple of her eye. Mr. Bajaj also adores the child. However, Sneha doesn't know who her father is. She goes to school where she befriends a girl Diya who is, in fact, Rakhi's daughter. Sneha soon visits the Basu House with Diya where everyone adores her. Since she gives her name as Sneha Sharma, nobody guesses her to be Anurag's daughter. Anurag, who is depressed by his son's death even after 8 years, has withdrawn into a shell. However, he is soon won over by his daughter who resembles him in many ways. Diya and Sneha go to a summer camp, and Anurag goes with them. He bonds with Sneha who reminds him both of himself and the love of his life, Prerna. One day, he is shocked to learn that Sneha does not know who her father is. Very soon after that, Sneha misses her mother and wants her to come to the summer camp; Prerna agrees. She is shocked to find Anurag there and even more to see that her daughter knows him very well and adores him. Even Anurag is shocked to find out that the child he has grown to love is actually the proof of his ex-wife's infidelity. Due to societal pressures and Sneha's increasing questions about her father's identity, Prerna decides to marry Mr. Bajaj. They get engaged. Later on, fate plays its cards again and Sneha is diagnosed with Leukemia. At this time, Anurag comes to know Sneha is his daughter and is realizes his mistake in not trusting Prerna. He is heartbroken. Aparna gets jealous. The doctors are not able to find a bone marrow that will suit Sneha. In order to save her life they recommend Prerna to bear another child whose bone marrow will save Sneha's life. In a practical move (supported by Bajaj and Aparna), Anurag and Prerna come together to conceive another child. While they no longer wish to be together, their union and the resulting pregnancy cause insecurity to both Aparna and Mr. Bajaj. Anurag's concern for Prerna, Sneha and the unborn child keeps creating misunderstandings in both the couple's lives.
Very soon after all this, Karvachauth (a festival of the Hindus for married women) approaches. Knowing that things in the two couples' lives are sour, Aparna decides to fast to make things okay again. When Anurag returns, he sees everyone is out and only Aparna is in the house. In the midst of loving conversation between the couple, Aparna suddenly stabs Anurag brutally with a knife!! Then the real truth of Aparna comes out. She is actually an evil person, who is already married to a man named Debo, with whom she has a son called Shravan. She only wants Anurag's property. But she has hidden Shravan and Debo doesn't know his son's whereabouts. So he helps Aparna kill Anurag. The entire Basu family is plunged into despair and everyone pities Aparna thinking that she is a grieving widow. However, the truth is that Debo had saved Anurag and told him everything. They make a plan to get back at Aparna and also find out about Shravan. Prerna and Sneha also get to know everything. Then they all try to frighten Aparna by making her see Anurag's (so called) ghost everywhere. She shouts out the truth and is exposed as other family members, along with the police, have overheard everything, as planned by Prerna. Aparna is sent to jail.
After Rishabh Bajaj finds out that Anurag is alive, he thinks Prerna still loves the latter; so he breaks his engagement and distances himself from her. He also behaves rudely to her so that she starts disliking him and goes to Anurag. But Bajaj does not know that Prerna is madly in love with him and even risks her life (and that of her unborn child) for his sake. Anurag loves Prerna and wants to marry her, but when he finds out that she loves Rishabh Bajaj, he gracefully accepts this. He decides to be a good friend to Prerna and unite the two lovers with the help of Vishakha and Sneha. Later on, Prerna gives birth to a son and names him Prem in memory of her first child. Then enters Madhvi - she is Menaka's sister and Mr. Bajaj gets into a relationship with her. But eventually he realizes that Prerna is his love. So they patch up and get married. They have a daughter named kasak. Soon after, their lives are torn apart yet again when the toddler Prem is kidnapped by Komolika through Anurag's carelessness. Prerna is furious with Anurag and the erstwhile lovers-turned-friends get totally estranged from one another. Anurag goes abroad with his adopted son Shravan. After this the story takes a huge time-leap of a generation.
Later on Mr. Bajaj once again gets involved in an accident and losses his memory. Komolika re-enters the scene as a changed woman. Mr. Bajaj asks Anurag to tell him the truth of his life on top of a hill cliff where it was snowing. When Anurag starts telling him everything about their past, he and Mr. Bajaj in a catfight ends up slipping in a cold river where there were crocodiles!! Prerna reaches there with Komolika and Prerna tries to shoot the crocodile and succeeds. Then Anurag is shocked to know another secret! Komolika is not changed!! She also fires Mr. Bajaj on his head due to which he becomes mentally unstable. He goes to meet her in the same hill cliff with Prerna. Komolika and Anurag start having a fight and Prerna rushes to save Anurag. In the tussle that happens Komolika shoots Prerna. Prerna dies but Komolika slips from the hill and breathes her last. Anurag cries and hugs Prerna as he realizes he loves her still then, stays like that all night and dies in the cold. In the last episode the show takes a leap of many years, it is shown that an older Prem (knowing everything about his parents from his sister, now an older Sneha) writes the book 'Kasauti Zindagi Kay' - his parent's life story. Anurag and Prerna reunite after their death.It is also shown that Mr Bajaj is still alive and is in the mental hospital.
